Episode 7.3: “Fire in the Hole”

Good morning!  Happy True Blood Day!…Or–if you are like me–Ambivalent True Blood Day!

I thought I’d post this early in the day so that those who wanted to could speculate about the Wiki description.  This will be the blog for tonight too, so please return if you are going to watch the episode with us!

Tonight’s drinking game has 2 steps:

1. Make sure to drink a little BEFORE the episode.  We will need to make a preemptive drinking strike at the “ridiculosity.”

2. Speaking of “ridiculosity” (yep–I’m coining a new word), during the episode, we drink anytime there’s a blatant “plot hole.”  For instance, last week, we would have drunk at the inconsistency of “blood rules.”  Jason has enough of Eric’s blood left to dream, but Sookie doesn’t have enough of Bill’s blood left for him to feel if she’s in trouble?  Whatever.  Be sure to point out the “plot hole” for all.

Here’s the description of Episode 3 from Wiki:

Sookie hatches a dangerous plan to take down the H-Vamps, even as Vince and his armed vigilantes pose an equally serious threat. Lafayette gets high with James; Jason eyes a family future with Violet ; Willa is forced to find a new place to stay; Sarah Newlin sheds her past. Pam offers Eric a compelling reason to return to Louisiana – and be the vampire he used to be.

Item 1: “Hatches” is a good word for Sookie’s plans.  You’d think that the girl would have learned to “stop, drop, and fuckin’ THINK” when in the midst of a shit-storm.  But no….She’s gonna go to Bill, drink his blood, and——in-fucking-explicably——let him drink hers (I’m betting).  And why?  So that he can “feel” her if she’s in trouble.  And then they are going to go TOGETHER to whatever trouble she’s “hatched.”  So Bill won’t need to “feel” her; he’ll be able to SEE her.  Hell’s bells, Sook!  You really can’t be taught, can you?

Sookie: Queen of Selective Amnesia
Sookie: Queen of Selective Amnesia

Item 2: Sigh.  I don’t care about Vince and the Vigilante People–do you?  (The Village People would be a different story.)  I say–“take out” the town.  I can think of very few I still care about in Bon Temps, so let’s have a population purge.

Item 3: Lafayette and James get high again.  And I’m bettin’ that will lead to “lovin’.”  And I’m AGAINST it!  NOT b/c I don’t think Lala deserves love and/or sex, but because it’s another thing coming from left field.  Many of you pointed out last week that the scene between Eric and Jason was offensive–NOT because it depicted gay physicality–but b/c the actual gay/lesbian/bisexual couples in the show never actually get legitimate love and sex scenes.  And I agree.  Watching two girls is not my cup of tea, but where was the Pam & Tara love/sex scene?  What about a proper Lala and Jesus scene?  Tara had a sex scene w/ her “interest” in S4, but–since we weren’t invested in that relationship–it had less meaning for the viewer.  So now it seems like James will “become” suddenly gay b/c he’s high??????  NO–I’m sorry, but that just seems somehow offensive.  What?  He wouldn’t be attracted and make the moves on Lala if he were sober?  TB needs to STOP their  practice of people getting drunk/high and then seeking out sex (Sookie w/ Alcide–more than once).

Dumb

Even Eric seems to use the “trick,” as Jason takes his “liquid courage” before his dream heats up.

drink up!
drink up!

Moreover, why can’t Jessica–who deserves a break–have a “real” love?  Sigh.  I thought Jason and she would be great, but that was squandered, just like Hoyt and her.

Rumor has it that the actor playing James last year quit the show b/c he didn’t want to do the gay scenes.  Maybe he quit b/c the gay storyline he was expected to do seems to come out of nowhere for the character of James.  I just really think that Lala deserves much better–not a relationship fueled by getting “high.”  I always loved the idea that HBO would make this show progressive when it came to people and their rights and preferences (whether they be gay, straight, or in between), but I just don’t think this is the way to do it.

Item 4: Jason and Violet—the more I think about this “relationship,” the more I just think—–NO!  It’s just so unhealthy!  Given what Jason suffered from the Werepanthers, his relationship with Violet is even more disturbing. And–sorry–I don’t buy the “Jason is Man scene” in the first episode of the season–as if Violet was waiting for him to “reassert” is masculinity.  For a show that supposedly pushes the boundaries, we are definitely getting a lot of stereotypes about gender thrown at us.  To “be a man,” you have to “take control” and forcefully screw your woman?  Being a man means that you have to be the “strong/aggressive” one and the “woman” can’t undermine your authority (as Violet supposedly does in Episode 1 w/ Vince’s crew).  Whatever, Jason.  Grow up and join the new century.

What the

Arguably, last week’s Jason/Eric fantasy was about Jason reasserting his masculinity too.

jason-eric

Remember it was Jason’s dream, so it was his “script” in a way.  And–ironically–that scene depicted “masculinity” in a pretty simplistic and heteronormative way.  (Jason tackles Eric for God sakes!)  Eric is powerful–and others have pointed out that Jason has probably looked “up” to him as something of an idol: Eric has people falling all over themselves to seek his attention, he’s successful at business, etc.  In his fantasy, Jason tries to be the aggressor.  Some have even gone as far as to say that Eric was the “bottom” in that scene–which I have problems with b/c–again–that would suggest that all “bottoms must be feminine” and all “tops must be masculine.”  That’s not the case with the gay people I know.  Moreover, Jason and Eric’s pants were on during the scene–so the “bottom” as well as the “bottoms” remained concealed.  If a woman–let’s just imagine that is was me for the sake of this argument 🙂 –was in Jason’s place, jumping onto Eric’s back and wrestling him to the floor and then kissing his back and neck and then receiving kisses from Eric as he turned over and began to sit up, would it have seemed like Eric was the “bottom?”  [When Sookie pushed Eric to the bed in his fantasy, was he the “bottom?”]  No to both questions.  And YES to both!  But does any of it change Eric’s inherent badassness or how “masculine/feminine” he is?  NO.  [Now–I’m going to take a break as I imagine other scenarios.]

Eric-Sookie-Gif-sookie-and-eric-14546152-350-197

Okay–“interlude” and mini-rant over…Back to the Wiki description:

Item 5: Poor Willa…the more I feel sorry for her, the less I wish she had ever been “made.”  And–YES–let’s blame the naive vampire for Lettie Mae’s “crazy.”  Well done.  I wonder where she’ll stay?  Hmmmm…. let’s speculate about the “ridiculostic” possibilities.  Here’s one for you: Sam.  Yes—–that’s my guess; she’ll stay w/ Sam.  The town’s people shoot him.  That means he’ll need a healing, and Willa gives out blood like candy.  I wonder if Sam will be tempted to cheat on the “love of his life.”  What was her name again?  Oh–yes–Nicole.  Do y’all have any speculations?

Item 6: Sarah “sheds” her past?  Well—ain’t that “special.”  Oh, Sara–which of your “coo coo for cocoa puffs” pasts will you be shedding?  I’m guessing NONE of them–not really.  But Sara is potentially a good “villain” and since the Hep-V vamps are “tame” and enjoy “nap time,” I would like to see some kind of villain I can enjoy.

Sara

Item 7: Eric and Pam——-the only compelling reason to watch.  We know the “compelling reason” to return to Louisiana won’t be logical.  It won’t be Sookie or Willa.  It will likely relate to “revenge.”  Hey, maybe Pam will convince Eric that he needs to go back to kill Sara——-or Bill?  Too much to hope for?  Probably….sigh.  We’ll probably get introduced to some knew character—Eric’s “love interest” who probably “did him wrong” in the past.  That way the “creators” can keep the Eric/Pam story “safely” away from the other storyline so that none of us will “remember” how they’ve completely discounted the possibility of an Eric/Sookie story.

Sigh….

Well–I have a feeling we are in for a bumpy ride tonight.  If you have thoughts on the Wiki description, please share.  Otherwise, I hope to see you back here tonight @ 9:00 p.m. EST and 6:00 p.m. California Kat time.

Now–to make us all feel better, let’s stare at this for a moment:

shirt open

Better?

Hopefully, I’ll see you later!

Anyway, I’m sure tonight’s episode will be filled with plenty of WTF moments followed by some “seriously?!?!?!” with a dash of “oh hell no!!!”. And as for drinking early, I’m starting with brunch right now. I’m having a pitcher of sangria by myself. So many cheers as we gear up for tonight’s lunacy.

Maybe Eric’s reason to return to Dallas is to kill Sarah Newlin. Now that is a plan I can get on board with!!!!!!!

Episode 6 includes this description: “Eric and Pam forge an unlikely alliance.” It’s still early yet, but I think they will force this alliance with Sarah somehow. Who knows–if something might be interesting, TB won’t do it.

ROTFLMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And drooling… Seriously laughing & choking on said laughter. On a break from cleaning & putting freshly painted BR back together, I may have to nap before tonight’s schmepisode & drinking. Rant, rant, rant away. I can’t believe how this show has disintegrated to using such disgusting stereotypes. My first WTF of the day. Progressive my fat Irish ass. Just how does a vampire get high anyway? They are DEAD. I smoked pot like a champion back in the 70’s and I never felt the urge to switch my sexual preference. I’ll admit to being hungry, horny, and tired, but hey! You don’t need to smoke pot to feel any of those things, Vampires! And, you’re DEAD! Plot hole for gratuitous (and needless) homosexual love scene. Shame on you, Writer, Brian Buckner, Alan Ball, & HBO!

At least Eric is hot. There handling of relationships is terrible. I heard somewhere that Pam’s actress put in her contract she wouldn’t do any explicit nudity/sex scenes. (Which explains why we don’t see her go hot and heavy with Eric in the flashback scene, and instead just witness the aftermath.) TB pretty much has turned into a bad horror movie/soap opera.

Yep! We’ve got that! Kristen Bauer (cannot remember her married name) is just lovely. My friend & I met her at Dragon Con several years ago and she could not have been more gracious. Yeah, it’s unfortunate what’s happened to a once-promising show though it often happens when book rights are sold in Tinseltown. The author’s vision rarely meets that of the buyer (unless it’s historical fact/autobiographies).

Think maybe they’ll get “high” on V? They’ve already proven that vampires can get high pm V in season 5, albeit that was old as dirt Lillith’s blood. Then again, since they used it in season 5, it would actually be CONSISTENT if they did it this season and we can’t let that happen!! But honestly, I can’t see Lala getting THAT high off of smoking that he passes out like in the preview of the ep, but who knows…we didn’t even know that vampires could get high off a bong before last week. I think I’ll take a drink right now, just for thinking about that plot hole.

The only time I saw people pass out from getting high was when they were drinking and THEN they got high. Being stupid. I guess Lala could do V, again,as you said it would be CONSISTENT, but we know that won’t happen! Honestly, it’s like playing “Where’s Waldo?” in reverse. Maybe we should point out the things that make sense! Yes, let the drinking commence! Maybe one of these episodes will make it appear as though someone at HBO has put down the bong.

LOL “Where’s Waldo? in reverse”…exactly!! and Oh the drinking has already begun, just gearing up. Still 1/2 hour until “showtime”. I might actually need to open another bottle of wine before it starts. I would drink in celebration each time something does make sense, but that would leave me stone cold sober…LOL Better in frustration when it doesn’t, at least that way by the end of the ep, I’ll be too drunk to care! 🙂 Does it make me a bad person to hope that when the lame HepVamps wake up from their “catnaps” and figure out they were trying to escape they kill Nicole, pregnant or not? That’s awful isn’t it? I just don’t see the point of her, not before and not now. After all, no one seems to be looking for them after the first night that they were takien….I mean, WTF is up with that???? just hope that it isn’t as boring as last week. Truly bored with the pointlessness of so much that happened last week….that is until the end when we got to see the Viking God that is Eric, sick or not.

OMG. We just watched it again. My husband for the first time, and me for the second. I only get the first viewing on the laptop, tomorrow on OnDemand. I don’t think he’ll be watching anymore episodes this season… I had to fast forward through Eric & Jason. He just gave me a look after it was over, although he was surprised about Eric. We determined that there are just a few good things about show. Lafayette, Jason, and the music. I’m throwing in Eric since he’s not on here to see it!
So yeah, what’s up with everyone be so lax about finding these women from Bon Temps? I realize it’s the same day and all, but wouldn’t you think they would be ripping places apart? Nope, they go running off to some deserted town where the bodies would have been stinkin’ to high heaven. WTF? DRINK!!! Sookie asks Bill if he’ll be able to feel her if he has her blood? Did she get brain damage when she in NeverNeverland? How did she forget that??!! It’s the ONLY thing he was honest about! DRINK!!!

I pretty much agree with all your points. I know the writer said they were doing a full circle this season by referencing season 1 but how continuously stupid and naive do they have to make Sookie? Seriously. Where the hell has the smart and independent Sookie gone? Of course by ingesting Bills’ blood she’ll fall for him again and not question it because his blood also acts as a lobotimzer….
I felt like the Jason and Eric scene was only put in because Buckner messed up last season when he tried to market Erics’ burning as a sexy and provocative scene and since people thought it would be an Eric/Jason blood dream he decided to throw them *ahem* a bone. Lazy writing all done in an effort to distract the viewers from the horrific storyline and the reveal of Eric with Hep V at the end.
For a show that had imagery alluding to gay rights etc they really messed up the gay couples on the show. We only ever seen it played for sh*ts and giggles except when Tara was with that girl from New Orleans in season 4 and a few tender moments between Lala and Jesus.
Buckner stated they were getting ride of extra characters last season. He killed off 2 and introduced 5 and now there’s the Bon Temps vigilantes who can feic off! It’s the last season. I want to see the characters that were there since the beginning (*except Behl)….

Am on extended day shift so I might not get to watch this until Wednesday but I’ll leave my views after I watch.

OK, I’ve got a new theory about this. We know that Tara’s finally dead (and can I get an “Amen” AND a “Hallelujahs?”) because we finally had Maker acknowledgement; there’s also that thing that if a character dies offscreen, the character is really, most sincerely dead. We didn’t see it, but I’m thinking the thing that’s taken Lettie Mae off the wagon & put her back on the crazy train? Lettie Mae killed Tara. Tara staked the Hep-V vamp, but when she turned back to Lettie Mae, Lettie Mae staked her. She saw her as sinful and all that was wrong. That’s why she keeps hearing Tara & wanting to see her. Guilt does some very strange things to the psyche.

That’s an interesting theory. I would be more intrigued by that plot point than to have her simply be addicted to vampire blood and hallucinating on that. Although it does fit in with her character, it doesn’t really seem to have much of a point in the last season and with Tara dead.

Apparently Eric can love a human, and (plot hole!) her name doesn’t have to be Sookie. Marnie must have been a fantastic witch and excellent at casting spells because we’ve never seen nor heard of Sylvie – from Eric or PAM! Obviously Sookie’s microwave hands didn’t restore Eric’s full memoriy because he believed, up to this point at least, that Sookie was the only human woman he ever loved. Why does Eric keep getting screwed and not getting the chance to enjoy it? Why do we care…

So that’s part of the redemption plan. He’s a different vampire than before because he has different blood? Vampires live off of blood. Wouldn’t that mean every vampire is different after every one of their meals. Do the writers even really believe this crap they are trying to sell?

Do you believe what James says in next week’s trailer? that she’s not healing b/c she’s not eating? the ONLY time we’ve seen that was in season 4 when Eric was under silver for 24 hours. Does that deserve a post ep drink?

I have a question. Eric and Pam had very little knowledge of Sarah Newlin’s part in S6 Vamp Camp. At the time Jason let Sarah go, there was no one else around. How did Pam know? Why is Eric so motivated on revenge when he’s dying when he could barely get motivated on revenge for his family in S3? And who the hell are the all these Japanese guys? They look like they jumped right out of a cartoon or a really bad 80’s movie!

Ok, I was thinking it over this morning, (because like a bad dream it often sticks with you when you wake up or wakes you up screaminig in the middle of the night) Bill says that he “covered their tracks” so that Alcide can’t track them. Then not only does Alcide find them, but so does Jason, Andy, et al…..So, did Bill really cover anything or did he want them to be found to get rid of the competition? I mean seriously, all that driving and where did he take them, to her backyard or something?? I cannot wait for Sookie to realize that since he came there to find her that he died because of her. She’s so obsessed that she doesn’t want anyone else to die for her and then she all but kills her boyfriend who she supposedly loves by not being honest with him. and back to Eric telling Sookie he doesn’t understand what love is, he not only loved whoever this Sylvie chick was, but it was only 30 years ago! I know that is just a bad plot point to try to get us mindless drones to forget season 4, but it’s pretty insulting to anyone who ever watched any season of the show how he felt about her. Ok, I’m done for now. Had to get that off my chest. 🙂

Hi, I’m loving all the posts way better than the latest episode. Thanks for improving my mood re:TB. Can I just point out 1 small defect that puts all of the Sarah crap to bed? While watching the “catch up” seasons, my husband, who doesn’t watch anymore cuz of the character screw-ups, passed by the tv stopped and said “why can’t Eric smell or hear Sarah hiding under the pile of dead?”. Well crap…if someone who isn’t invested in the show can notice that in just a passing glance…how are we, the crazies that are still holding out hope that TIIC will get their act together, supposed to cope with how little TIIC cares about the show & its fans? Thanks for letting me get that off my chest. Now I’ll go back to reading one of Kat’s stories, at least she doesn’t have plot holes you can drive a semi through.

Yes Kinnik i agree with you Eric’s flashback didn’t make sense with what has been said and done in the previous seasons ..Eric didn’t like humans..remember when Bill killed Longshadow Eric said “Humans .Seriously Bill how can you like them so much” or in season 4 whenPam said to Ginger ” I’ve seen Eric conquer supermodels and princesses and then spit out their bones when he was finished with them. How can someone like Sookie take him away from me” (and many other quotes) If Sylvie was so important to Eric wouldn’t Pam remember her!!! The flashback was so forced and Eric so OOC all was done so the character of Bill can be whitewashed !!! One more thing how could Pam know about Sarah? Who told her that Jason didn’t killed her?I remember Pam leaving immediately after vamp camp to go and search for Eric…Nothing makes sense anymore!!

The biggest thing I noticed at the end of the episode is before the Hep V vamps show up and everyone else Holly starts walking over to Sookie. After everything happened where is Holly? Wouldn’t you think that Andy would notice her since she is his girlfriend??? Also I see Alcide getting killed as making way for Sookie to go back to Bill. I’m sure she will wind up in bed with him next episode because that’s what happened after her Gran died. She put on her virgin white night gown and ran over to Bill’s house to get laid. So we all know how she will deal with her grief now. And Eric and Sylvie I have no idea where that came from. I mean really…he’s made comments about not understanding love and also I would think if he has done this before with another woman why would Pam be making such a big deal about Sookie. She shared Eric before and he chose her so why wouldn’t he do the same thing now. I don’t think the writes are even remembering what they write for all the plot wholes that show up.

So i got off work early and ending up caving and watching the episode. Some quick thoughts..
Lol forever at Alcide growling and running to Bills’ house and his death made no impact on me except to clear the path to Bill, urgh. We’re supposed to believe that his blood was cleared when he was drained?! Why the hell did she confide in Bill over Alcide loving her more and the story from her childhood? Plus the civil war flashback??! Serious crap.
Maxine!?!? 😦 Violet is truly vile. Stake her Jason!!
Sylvie was just a pointless way to see Askars arse again (yum!) It just made the whole I do not love humans or don’t understand love speel in the past redundant. His hair was hilarious though.
Annoyed that Alcides’ death got more attention that Taras’ tbh..

“You can’t not finish the story between her and Bill; you can’t not have her settle the score with Eric.”

That quote from Joe’s interview was most intriguing. ‘Finish’ the story with Bill but ‘settle the score’ with Eric. Like she was simply playing games with Eric……

However, looks like we will get at least one Sookie and Eric scene.

I haven’t read the interview, yet. Seriously, settle what score? He didn’t do anything bad to her that would need her to settle anything. She said leave me alone, I rescind your invitation and he did. Out of respect for her because he has nobility and loyalty and honor. Unless she’s gonna settle down with him or he’s gonna kill Bill, her true love HA, then what score is there to settle? Gonna tell him she never loved him and could never love him just to hurt him more and again? Hasn’t he suffered enough from her? Ahhhhrrrrggg! Sookie can’t you see the tall blond Viking for what he is?

Late to the party, but it was a real chore catching up on this season…I swear I am going to have a permanent palm shaped mark on my forehead before this season is over.

Here is my list of characters and a description of how annoying they are:

    Character: Latie Mae
    Annoying Rating: FUCKING ANNOYING
I have always hated Latie Mae but this season is making me loathe her even more. She didn’t even give two shits about Tara and now that she is gone we have to waste time going over Latie’s guilt for never being able to make up for how shit-tastic of a mother she was? God dammit!

    Character: Lafayette
    Annoying Rating: Pretty annoying
I can’t be the only one to feel that TIIC have pretty much fucked up this character. He is a hot mess. I miss Jesus.

    Character: Sylvie
Annoying Rating: I DON’T FUCKING CARE
The only good thing about her character: being able to see that truly glorious Sweedish ass as Eric fucked her.

    Charcters: People of Bon Tomps
Annoying Rating: Let the H-Vamps take them
I am disappointed in Kenya, I thought she was better than that. These hicks are going to get themselves killed.

Characters: Jessica, Adeline, Holly’s other son, James, Sam, Willa, etc.
Annoying Rating: I don’t really care enough about these characters to give a rating
I find all of these characters to be quite boring and I am no longer invested in them (except maybe Adeline, she has some potential).

    Character: Pam
Annoying Rating: Your maker doesn’t deserve you
More on that later when I get to Eric. I was pretty miffed that we barely got an acknowledgement about Tara’s death from her,

    NOW TO THE BIG ONES:

    Charcter: Alcide
Annoying Rating: You deserved a better death
This last episode, I was actually getting behind Sookie/Alcide not to mention Joe Manganiello is the second hottest actor on the show (all of you know who the first place goes to. ;D ). He didn’t deserve that out of nowhere, really stupid death.

    Character: Bill
Annoying Rating: Please go shoot yourself in the throat so you can no longer talk with that FUCKING annoying southern accent
I hate Bill. I hate the way he talks. I hate the way he looks at people. I hate the sound of his voice. I hate his haircut. I can’t find a single thing that I like about Bill at all this season. Also, why is he getting away without any blame or guilt for BLOWING UP the Tru Blood factories and STARTING THIS ENTIRE SHITSTORM!?!?!?!?!

    Character: Eric
Annoying Rating; Get off your whiney pansy ass, stop feeling bad for yourself and mourning over some French chick from 30 years ago, and be a BAD ASS MOTHER FUCKING VAMPIRE
I really wanted to stake 80s Eric soooo much! During the flash back Pam was the one saying sorry but it was all Eric’s fault. He is the one who dicked around (quite literally), endangered his progeny, and let his french piece of ass get killed. I didn’t think a 1000 year old Viking vampire could be so dumb.

And last but definitely not least…

    Character: Sookie
Annoying Rating: How does it feel to cause the death of the man you love?
Please Sookie, just take the fucking time to consider the consequences of your actions. How well have these hair-brained plans worked out for you in the past? Hmm, they all fell through and you ended up endangering your loved ones? Well, geez, MAYBE YOU SHOULD STOP THEN!

Phew, sorry, that was pretty long winded…

Anyway, now I am caught up and I can join in with you this sunday to rant about the shitstorm of an episode it is going to be. We seriously need to start making bets on which character is going to die next.

    Cheers!

    ~~sharky

P.S. Poor Arlene, that was the most disgusting thing I have seen on this show for a long time…
