On Anonymous Reviews 2

Have I mentioned how much I hate that people can leave “guest reviews” over at fanfiction.net?  I blame that website.  There is simply NO good reason for the anon. review.

I just got this one regarding Uninvited.  I’m not upset that it’s “negative.”  It’s not really negative, but–in a lot of ways–this kind of thing frustrates me even more, so you are the victims of my venting–AGAIN.  SORRY.

I’m writing this on the off chance that the review writer is reading.  Here’s the comment:

:Well s***! I can’t sit thru another Eric torture and r*** by Russell or Sookies mind f*** in fairy to be a breeder. Sorry. I get you say it won’t be the same but I can[not] do it again. I loved this part though. Thanks

Scratching head.  The reader/reviewer acknowledged that I had said that things weren’t going to be the same as my other story, but still won’t read on?  Does this person think I’m lying?

I’m not a liar!  Except for the white lies I tell the hubby.  Yes, dinner was great.  No, shaving off your beard doesn’t make you look chinless.  Absolutely, let’s go out with your work friends; sounds fun!

Just in case the commenter in question–or any others with similar fears–is reading this, let me set things straight!

1. Fact: This story is NOT like Come Back to Me.  Yes–some of the “threats” are similar, but the characters’ reactions to those threats haven’t been, nor will they be, the same.

2. Fact: Eric will not be raped by Russell in this series.  I don’t know how to say this any more clearly.  Yes–Russell wants to capture and torture Eric–with all kinds of abuses.  That doesn’t mean he’ll succeed.  THIS SERIES DOESN’T CONTAIN RAPE.

3. Fact: Sookie is not going to be “mind fucked” or “body fucked” in Faerie.

4. Fact: The fairies in this story will be very little like the fairies in Come Back to Me—as is evidenced by the changes in casting and the complete difference in the Niall character.

5. Fact: The Un-Series is NOT the Back and Forth Series!

It’s frustrating!  This reader is obviously going to stop reading based on wrong guesses about where this story is going based on PAST work I’ve done.  And I just don’t get it!  Why not just send me a PM that asks me to clarify or sign in so that I can respond and clear stuff up?  I’ve offered to give out spoilers to those who need them.  And I’m cool with that too.  I’ve said many times that I like to know how a story ends up as I’m reading it!  Why would I judge others for writing to me to ask for assurance?

Answer?  I wouldn’t.

That being said: If the reader believes that this story and the Back and Forth Series are that similar to one another, then the justifiable reason for stopping would be boredom.  But I don’t think they are close at all!  Maybe 5% of the material is similar…but that’s to be expected–right?  I’m working w/ the same characters in the TB universe.  Up through season 3 where I picked up the story, I have to keep stuff the same about them.  Therefore:

  • Russell will always want to be a sadistic bastard.
  • Pam will always want to hide her true emotions with snark.
  • Eric will always try to deny his feelings–until he can’t, at which point he adapts and moves forward.
  • Sookie will always have shit from her past to deal with.
  • Bill will be—Bill.
  • Etc.

So PLEASE–I beg of you–don’t stop reading based on fears you have about what I MIGHT do (even though I’ve said I WON’T be doing the things you fear).  Please just send me a message that I can respond to or sign in so that I can set the record straight.

I ACTUALLY CARE ABOUT READERS.  I care what you think and I want to produce things that you want to read.  I don’t succeed for everyone.  I know that, and I’ve learned to be okay with it.  But I hate to lose readers based on inaccurate perceptions.

Sorry for the rant…but I’m still scratching my head….and I’m just sad to be losing a reader for no good reason.  😦

I hope that someday soon FF.net will get rid of guest reviews. You can sign in about half a dozen different ways it’s not hard. I don’t understand why they are catering to the cowards who can’t man up and use their name.

Yes the ending was quite a shock and for a moment I thought ‘Oh, no! It’s going to be like Come Back to Me’ which I have never finished because I’m a whimp and can’t stand that much angst. (One day I will read it. Well more like one week or two.) But you thoughtfully wrote that this series will be nothing like your other and I choose to believe you and will continue reading. Why wouldn’t I?

It’s very frustrating when it the reader responds and it seems as if they didn’t even read what you wrote. I know that you are a very loved writer and have many followers. Look at how many awards you were just nominated for. I think you should start posting only the first two chapters of a story on FF.net and then direct them here.

I’m sorry you are having to deal with this. There are a lot of us out there who know how you feel.

I appreciate the support. I’ve thought about stopping at ff.net, but I have several readers there who don’t like to read other places. And I understand that too. Ff.net has more stories than other places and it doesn’t allow for all the pictures, etc., so those with slow internet connections or who have to read on their smart phones are well-served by it. So–I will continue–at least for now. But I just wish they’d get a clue about the idiocy of having anon/guest reviews. They fall into 3 categories:
    1. flaming/negative nonsense–I wouldn’t bother to respond to these anyway
    2. things like the above–odd responses that I want to respond to and clear up
    3. short messages of support from people who don’t have accounts or who are working on phones where signing in is a hassle–I’d hate to lose out on these snippets, but there aren’t that many of them, and if ff.net did away with them, they’d actually potentially have more “invested” participants.
Anyway, I don’t expect things to change—-because that would be logical….LOL.

I can certainly vouch for the fact that you care … when I flipped over 37 … you hurriedly sent me the summaries for the upcoming chapter banners so I could “see” where it was going … In fairness I think I did tell you to go into protective custody for a few chapters 🙂

FF.net really needs to do away with the guest reviewer function. I swear last year it got to the point where I was reluctant/scared to read reviews there because every chapter we (SunsetQueens) received one telling us how wrong we were, or what they didn’t like, we should do different. Even when we edited the chapters there we still got the guest reviewers there telling us how disgusting we were for what he wrote. So they obviously read the unedited version on our WordPress and then jumped back to ff.net to not log in and review.

I’ll be perfectly honest and say when I got to the end of the chapter I was 😧😱😤 and then I read your AN and I was 😊. I think some readers forget the story is in the journey and not the ending. It’s how they get there that draws us in.

I for one will definitely be reading the next part of UN series. I loved the first part. It deserved a double 👍.

Thanks. I will say that I started writing UN when I was in the middle of CBTM. It’s premise is found in a difference choice Eric makes about something (which will be clear around c. 4 or 5 of the sequel—by which time Sookie will be back on “earth” again. I just knew that people would go a little crazy at the end of Uninvited, which is why I tried to give them the clue I did. I guess some people just think I like to lie? Weird.

I say we start a site JUST to “examine” (show off, make fun of, troll) weird-ass. annoying, and frustrating “guest” (and other) reviews. Give monthly awards for the writer with the weirdest review…maybe give Razzberry Awards to whichever “guest” review makes us laugh/shake our head/roll our eyes the most… Hey, this could be a thing…

The other day I received a review (signed, thankfully) on FF from a reader who was so turned off/disgusted/bothered by something in one of my stories that she decided to quit reading. What turned her off so badly? Emma calls Andre by pet names (“honey” is the one I’m most likely to use) sometimes, which was much too often for her liking. Whatevs. But: the upside? At least I was able to explain my reasoning to her BECAUSE SHE SIGNED IN. It didn’t help, but at least she DID give me the courtesy of proving a way to reply. I just honestly don’t get why ALL reviewers don’t give us the courtesy of signing in, hell, even PM’ing if they want to keep it under wraps.

Ugh. Oh, well, your true fans would know that if they had any questions or concerns, all they have to do is TELL YOU, and you’ll be glad to discuss whatever the issue or question might be with them.

**PS: I’m also very glad to hear you’re leaving poor Eric’s anus alone…he’s quite proud of that wee rosebud, ya know…

But at least it made you smile, and that’s the main thing. Don’t take negative or “they obviously didn’t read the chapter or a/n” reviews seriously. Those idiots just aren’t worth your time because they’re not given by reasoning adults. If they were, then they’d either sign the fuck in, or if they were on a phone, wait until they were at a computer then, yeah, sign the fuck in. I’m truly lucky in that the VAST majority of my guest reviewers have been overwhelmingly positive, but the very rare few who I *really* needed to reply to but couldn’t – yeah, frustrating as hell.

Oh, Kat. These guest reviewers are horrid, for the most part. ElfChef & I have been pretty fortunate to have only received positive reviews from guests, so far. You know what? This reviewer WILL read the next portion. She’s just pissed that you ended the story there. You left her wanting more & she’s not getting it; therefore, she’s taking her toys & going home. Guest will return. She’ll miss your very gracious response though and that’s unfortunate because most writers wouldn’t take the time to reply in such a way.

FF.net has become quite the hostile site. It appears as if the powers that be are allowing the readers to run the site and make decisions based on their wants and values, and, as writers (or betas), we have no free speech, no way to block any derogatory “reviews”, and no way to block the individual from the story. That sets up the writer for blatantly cruel criticism from (and I’m thoroughly convinced of this now) people who know nothing about what goes into writing a story, the courage it takes to post it, and, finally, people who I’m not even sure have the ability to comprehend what it is they’re reading. Or if they can read past a certain grade level (I know, it’s a fragment!).

I feel so bad that this is happening to you, of all writers! You don’t deserve it.

It definitely is frustrating when assumptions are made about where stories are going and they are completely wrong. I understand not wanting to read certain situations an I get the need to know what’s going to happen with stories that they are reading. I can understand that. I guess what I don’t understand is why they simply don’t take the writers words (we tend to not lie) or even just ask directly.

I think you are being too kind in wanting to explain to someone who doesn’t give you or your story the benefit of the doubt. They are giving you a hard time for the sake of that only and are likely looking for -pardon the expression but – shit to stir. That is the only purpose – and trying to expalin is a waste of time. If someone is going to judge like that, they might not even read your reply had they allowed you one – and right there is the true color of the person – I am going to say my evil shit about you in public but you can’t say anything – na na. Childish and not worth your time (as you know intellectually but emotionally it still kinda hurts). So lots of good cyber support – love and hugs as you are getting here will hopefully help you to remember how appreciated your efforts are and to help you stop second guessing yourself (just in case that is where you go). I can’t imagine the time and effort that goes into writing and posting such great stories and feel guilty when I just wish you would write faster – since where do I come off wishing for MORE 🙂 So I have no idea why anyone would spend time to make you feel bad – and that is because only certain types of people do that. And you don’t want to interact with those people anyway – so I say be glad you can’t engage with crappy people! My first thought is to just stop posting there – but you are right – and I know that is where I found a lot of good authors and I still do look for new stuff there so it does reach a broader number of people. I guess you are stuck for now – but feel free to post again anytime you need some support 🙂

I may be wrong but anonymous reviews will never be outlawed at ff because they are good for traffic figures and that is what generates income to the website.
I do think the best thing is to delete reviews like the one above. I think as long as a writer puts the appropriate warnings for graphic sexual violence etc. when describing a story (Ao3 has a great system for that), reviewers should accept that they read at their own risk. I do avoid stories that are too intense for me and I do understand I can walk away if it gets too much so I really can’t see that such nasty reviews deserve anything but deletion…
One system that works well for many authors is posting one (or a few) chapters of a given story on FF and then continuing the rest on their own WP site. I do like discovering stories on FF and yes, it is great for that purpose but I’d say most people are happy to read on WP if they truly like the story… I know I do… And your site has particularly easy navigation (on the side and also the ‘next’ buttons) so it is no bother at all…

Thanks for the support. I always created a warning for the potentially disturbing scenes in Come Back to Me and even wrote different versions of the chapters; sadly sometimes nothing is “good enough.” Oh well. I’m glad you like my WP page. I definitely try to make navigation easier and have gone through several different formats to get the one I like best.

Please don’t let this upset you. I am quite sure that this person will continue reading your stories. There have been many times that I’ve almost thrown in the towel on writers and have always given them several more chapters to see where it goes. The FF forum has many problems, but it is very easy to use. Luckily for me, I’ve gotten into using WP – but if it wasn’t for FF.net. I wouldn’t have met many of you awesome authors.

I hope you’re right about the person giving this a little longer before bailing. I really do try to make all of my stories different, but some things can’t help but to be similar. But it was amazing to me how quickly a lot of people jumped to the idea that I’d be keeping Sookie and Eric apart for a long time (like in Come Back to Me)–as soon as Niall said he was taking her. LOL—she hasn’t even gotten there yet and a few are “refusing to continue” because I’m keeping them apart….um. Have they been apart for even one chapter yet? Um–no.

LOL. Again, thanks for the comments and support.

    Hi Kat.

If it seems like a foolish reason for someone to lose interest in your story, then I believe it is. Please don’t be disheartened by that.

I don’t like that writers worry, that they wring their hands over being (mis)understood, that they need every opportunity to explain themselves, in hopes that will accomodate every reader’s needs or whims. Your writing has every opportunity to be great, whether it is or not, and it will always, always be underappreciated by someone-and overappreciated, as well. There will be those who praise it and those who don’t, whether you know their identities or not. The act of showing something you’ve done invites opinion, and I do believe limiting guest reviews would limit opinions. I’ve never been a fan of that.

Write to write, write for your writing to be read and enjoyed. No one writes in hopes no one will enjoy it, no one should write in hopes that everyone will enjoy it. It’s impossible and debilitating- don’t let those harsh words plague you. Our own words do enough of that!
